Fort Castillo de San Marcos has witnessed centuries of change, conflict, and culture. Built by the Spanish in the late 17th century, the fort served as a formidable defense against rival European powers and marauding pirates seeking control over the strategic port of St. Augustine. Its unique construction using a rare form of limestone called coquina, quarried from nearby Anastasia Island, not only gave it an awe-inspiring appearance but also contributed to its resilience against cannon fire.
